Microchipping your pet

What is Microchipping?

Microchipping is a modern, safe and reliable way of permanently identifying your pet. It can make all the difference in being reunited with your pet should they stray or go missing. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and the procedure, which can be carried out by a vet or nurse, takes only a few minutes. From 6 April 2016 all dogs over 8 weeks of age will need to have a microchip fitted by law.

How does a microchip help to reunite a lost pet?

The pet’s microchip stores a unique 15 digit code. When a missing pet is found, an authorised user (for example a vet, dog warden or RSPCA inspector) will scan the pet and read the pet’s microchip number. The microchip database will be contacted and after completing some security checks the pets contact details will be released to the authorised user so that the pet can be reunited with its owner.
